FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Why should I choose a Phantom screen rather than one from your competitors?

Phantom Screens are the industry leaders in retractable screen solutions. Phantom specializes exclusively in retractable screens, which means we bring unmatched expertise and innovation to our products. Our screens are custom-built, professionally installed, and backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Plus, we have the largest Authorized Distributor Network across North America—so you can expect exceptional service from start to finish.

How long do the screens last?

Our screens are engineered to last for many years. Made with high-quality extruded aluminum and durable fiberglass or polyester mesh, they’re built to withstand everyday use. With proper maintenance and care, you can expect long-term performance. To give you extra peace of mind, all screens come with an industry-leading Limited Lifetime Warranty on components (excluding mesh).

Do retractable screens need much maintenance? And do I have to do it?

Retractable screens require very minimal maintenance—especially since they are often kept retracted during colder or wetter months. We recommend cleaning them once or twice a year to remove dust and debris from the mesh. A gentle wipe using mild detergent and water is usually sufficient. The tracks should also be cleaned once or twice a year, either by vacuuming or wiping with a soft cloth. For optimal performance, we also recommend applying 100% silicone spray to the tracks during routine maintenance.

How are they tested?

There are many quality control steps throughout the manufacturing process to ensure both quality and reliability. The screens are handmade and assembled and every one who works at Phantom takes pride in their work. Screens are taken at random throughout the manufacturing process and tested to ensure they meet our rigorous quality control standards. You can rest assured that the screens you receive will be tested for operation as well as durability.

Are they guaranteed?

Yes, our screens are backed by our Limited Lifetime Warranty. We stand behind the quality of our products, and the warranty reflects our commitment to long-term performance and customer satisfaction.

What kind of warranty do Phantom Screens come with?

We offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty on all parts and components, with the exception of the mesh. The warranty covers manufacturing defects and installation-related issues for the lifetime of the product as long as it remains installed at the original location by the original purchaser. Mesh replacement is available but not covered due to normal wear and tear.

Can the screens be repaired?

Yes. Although they are very durable, accidents do occasionally happen. The mesh can be replaced and most of the parts can be repaired or replaced. Your local Authorized Phantom representative will work with you to ensure the screen is up and running again.

What are retractable screens?

What’s the difference between a traditional and retractable screen?

Unlike traditional fixed screens, retractable screens remain out of sight until you need them. They retract into a discreet housing when not in use – preserving your views as well as your home’s décor.

Will I be able to see through the screens?

The great thing about retractable screens is that they disappear when you don’t need them – meaning you can enjoy your view all year round. The screen’s mesh allows you to see through the screen, but still keeps the bugs out. There are various mesh types available with different screen densities and colors, so if you want screens for solar shading or privacy, you can have that too.

Are they going to look ugly on my house?

Not at all. Phantom screens are designed to be discreet and match with your home’s décor. You can order them in a wide variety of colors and finishes – including wood grain. You can even have them matched to your specific color. And there are a variety of installation options, allowing you to keep the architectural integrity of your home.

What kind of bugs do they stop?

That depends on what mesh type you choose – but the holes in the mesh are very small and protect against most bugs. If you have specific needs, you should discuss it with your local Authorized Phantom representative, who will be able to advise you which mesh is right for you.

What are the screens made of?

There are several types of retractable screens available – for windows, doors and large openings. They all consist of the same four components – aluminum housings, slide bar and track and extremely durable PVC coated fiberglass or polyester mesh. There are lots of options for customization too. Explore our website for specific details.

Can I choose what type of mesh I have?

Yes. We offer over 30 different mesh types, available in a variety of colors and weaves, allowing you to select the perfect fit for your needs. Whether you’re looking for protection from the sun’s heat and glare, a mesh suitable for homes with pets, or even full privacy options, we have you covered. Simply consult with your Authorized Phantom Representative for more information and mesh samples. They’ll help you choose the best option to suit your requirements and aesthetic preferences.

Can I use these screens on my existing doors / windows?

Yes. All Phantom Screens are either custom-made or precisely cut to fit the exact dimensions of your existing openings, ensuring a seamless and tailored installation.

Can I use these screens on a new construction project?

Yes. Our expert installers can collaborate with your builder during the construction phase to integrate the screens into your project. This allows for a clean, built-in look that complements your design vision.

Do retractable screens comply with the relevant building codes?

Yes, Phantom retractable screens are designed to comply with relevant building codes. If you have a specific concern or need clarification regarding local regulations, we recommend contacting your local Authorized Phantom representative at 1-888-PHANTOM for accurate and detailed information.

Do the manually operated door screens require a track at the bottom?

Yes. However, the bottom track is low-profile and can be paired with a sill or threshold adapter to minimize tripping hazards. Various adapter options are available to accommodate different door types and installation requirements. You can learn more by visiting the product pages on our website.

Do retractable screens let the rain / wind through?

That depends on the mesh type. Mesh types with more open weaves allow greater air flow, tighter weave mesh less so. If the wind is very strong then the mesh may produce a “sailing” effect, or escape its tracks. This can be easily rectified when the wind has dropped. For peace of mind, it is always wise to retract the screens in very strong winds. The mesh doesn’t act as a waterproof screen and therefore rain will penetrate the mesh.

Do I have to install it myself?

No, you don’t. All Phantom Screens are professionally installed by trained experts who will ensure a perfect fit and treat your home with the utmost care throughout the process.

Aren’t they really expensive?

Not when you consider the value. Phantom screens are custom-built, professionally installed, and made by hand with premium materials. You’re not just getting a screen—you’re investing in quality, aesthetics, and durability. Compared to off-the-shelf alternatives, Phantom offers long-term performance and unmatched design integration.

How long do they take to install?

Installation time depends on the number and type of screens you order. Most standard door and window screens can be installed within a single day—often in under an hour for a single door. For larger or more complex projects, such as Executive motorized screens, installation time may vary due to different mounting options (e.g., fully recessed or surface-mounted housings). Your Authorized Phantom representative will work with you to schedule the installation and provide a timeline based on your specific project and any applicable lead times.

Where can I use them on my home?

Will they fit my doors / windows?

You can get retractable screens for nearly every kind of opening. For doors, there are retractable screens suitable for single in-swing and out-swing doors, double-French, sliding patio and oversized doors. You can choose retractable screens for all types of windows too – single or double hung, casement, awning, sliding or tilt & turn. Retractable screens can also be used on large openings such as patios, lanais, porches and verandas. We’ve included all the sizing information you need on each of our product pages, so explore the website to find out which product best suits your requirements.

What colors are available?

There are ten Signature colors: Classic White, Slivered Almond, Sandalwood, Driftwood Beige, Rideau Brown, Hartford Green, Coastal Grey, Calico Linen, Mineral Bronze and Phantom Black. Not all Signature colors are available in all products – so please check the relevant options pages for details.

Can I use one on my garage door to use the space with the door open?

What about my pets? Won’t they break the screen?

Sometimes, when the screens are first installed, pets can get confused and bump into them. There is enough “give” in the mesh to help prevent the screen from getting damaged. However, our retractable screens are intended for insect or solar protection only and should not be utilized as a pet retention system.

What happens if someone walks into my screen by accident?

It depends on the impact. A light bump typically won’t cause damage—the mesh has enough flexibility to withstand minor contact. In the case of a heavier collision, the mesh may pull away or require adjustment. If needed, your local Authorized Phantom representative can repair or replace any damaged components.
