Motorized retractable screens can transform a patio, porch, or outdoor living area into a more comfortable and versatile space. But because these screens are exposed to the elements, homeowners often have an important question:
How do Phantom Motorized Screens handle wind and cold weather?
Phantom Screens are designed to operate across a broad range of environmental conditions, but like any outdoor product, there are times when taking a few precautions can help protect your investment.
Here is what homeowners should know about using motorized retractable screens when the wind picks up or temperatures drop.
How Much Wind Can Retractable Screens Handle?
There isn’t one universal wind speed that determines whether a retractable screen is safe to use.
The amount of wind a screen can handle depends on several factors, including the size of the screen, fabric type, building height, location, surrounding terrain, and the direction of the wind.
For example, a larger screen experiences more wind force than a smaller screen because it essentially creates a larger “sail.” Mesh fabrics also respond differently to wind than solid fabrics.
That’s why Phantom does not claim its screens are rated to one specific wind speed.
Instead, homeowners should pay attention to changing weather conditions and retract their screens when necessary.
When Should You Retract Your Screens Because of Wind?
During a strong breeze of approximately 10 to 25 mph, Phantom’s guidance indicates homeowners can continue enjoying their screens.
When winds increase into the 30 to 50 mph range, larger screens should be rolled up.
Once winds reach approximately 55 mph or greater, all screens should be rolled up and protected.
Most importantly, fabric screens are not designed to provide protection during extreme wind conditions. If severe weather or storms are approaching, retracting your screens ahead of time is the safest choice.
Can You Use Motorized Retractable Screens in Cold Weather?
Wind isn’t the only weather condition that affects retractable screens. Temperature can also change how the screen’s motor, tracks, and vinyl material perform.
As temperatures fall below 14°F, electric motors may experience some reduction in power. Phantom’s Sure Fit tracks can still allow vinyl screens to move up and down, although homeowners should watch for ice and frost buildup that could interfere with screen movement.
When temperatures fall below -10°F, vinyl begins experiencing reduced impact resistance. Screens may still operate, but Phantom recommends using them with caution, particularly when windy conditions are also present.
At approximately -30°F, vinyl becomes increasingly susceptible to brittleness damage. At these temperatures, screens should remain rolled up and should not be used.
Watch for Ice and Frost
Temperature isn’t the only concern during winter.
Local weather conditions can cause ice and frost to accumulate around the tracks or screen. Even if the temperature itself is within an acceptable operating range, this buildup can prevent the screen from moving properly.
Never force a screen to operate if ice or frost appears to be restricting its movement. Allow conditions to improve and the buildup to clear before operating the screen again.
Protecting Your Phantom Screens for the Long Term
Motorized retractable screens are designed to provide years of outdoor comfort, but knowing when to retract them is an important part of protecting your investment.
A simple rule is to pay attention to the conditions around you.
If winds are becoming severe, retract your screens. If extreme cold is affecting the flexibility of the material, leave them rolled up. And if ice or frost is preventing normal movement, don’t force the system.
Taking these simple precautions can help keep your Phantom Screens operating properly season after season.
